Problem D2:
You have two rods made of different metals. When both rods are placed in ice water
(0 Deg C) they have the same length, L0. However, when both rods are placed in boiling
water (100 Deg C) one of the rods expands more than the other. What is the difference in
their lengths, L2 - L1, in the boiling water? If L2 -
L1 = L0/n3, what is n3? The coefficient
of linear expansion for rod 1 is &alpha1=1/n1 C-1. The
coefficient of linear expansion for rod 2 is &alpha2=1/n2 C-1.
Note that n3 is unitless and is negative if L1 > L2.
