Initially, a simple pendulum starts out from rest at an angle of 90 degrees
from the vertical. The bob has a mass of n_{1} and a massless string of
length L. The bob is released, it swings down and undergoes an elastic collision
with another ball of mass n_{2} located at the bottom of the swing. After
the elastic collision, the bob swings back and rises to a maximum height h(max)
as shown in the figure. Object n_{2} travels off to the right. If
h(max)=L/n_{3}, what is n_{3}? Note that n_{1} and n_{2}
have the same units of mass, and n_{3} is unitless.
